Great turnout at second Malaysian qualifier in Johor

By Jane Dripin
From the Water Tower, the leading team consisting of Muhammad Razani and his team-mate, 46 year-old Lea Elizabeth Yeo continued on to scale the Cargo Net before continuing their beach run towards the Finish Line, which was in front of the Desaru Golden Beach Resort. ?We did it!? Elizabeth exulted with her arms raised and fists pumping the air. I felt a thrilling course of triumph surge through me and my eyes were suddenly wet, as I watched them win the 90km race course clocking in at 7hrs 34 minutes and 40 seconds. They arrived at the finish line at 3:52pm. They won RM6,000 prize money and free entry into MIKE ?07 (Malaysia International Kayak Endurance ?07), courtesy of MIKE ?07 to be held in August 2007. In the Enduro Men?s Category, the ATM duo comprising of Mohamad Arumugam Abdullah and Jusery B. Gani (both from the Royal Malaysian Army) clocked in a time of 7 hrs 38 minutes and 31 seconds to finish at 4:00pm. They took home RM6,000 and free entry into MIKE ?07 as well.
Meanwhile, in the Men Solo category, Singaporean Tan Yeow Chung, 32, dominated the race right from the beginning. After surging through the Start line, the Solo category participants, mostly triathlon racers, went on their racing bikes to go through the 68 km tar roads as well as dirt trails. Upon reaching Check Point 1, they put their bikes away and put on their running shoes for the 10km run along the coastline of Desaru beach to arrive at Check Point 2. Arriving at the Check Point 2 Water Tower, they ran the rest of the 9km along trails and tar road over the cargo net at Check Point 3 and ran towards the finish line.
